How do we love ourselves?
By creating appropriate boundaries, being love, and being what we truly are in every moment.
Knowing that if we are not truly being our authentic selves, we are only denying the world the many unique gifts that we have to offer.
And by realizing that by stifling ourselves, we only deny others the bounty that is only ours to give.
Our society has unfortunately perpetuated the idea
that it is best to take care of everyone else first, and then ourselves if we have any energy left.
That simply isn't right!
We must make sure our cups are full and we are taken care of first. (Note that this doesn't mean to ignore others' needs, it it just a perspective shift from what many of us learned as children and young adults). If we do not do what we should do for ourselves and attempt to save and rescue others instead, we will drain our own energy as well, and then need others to rescue us! It can be a never-ending cycle.
I have an entire book on this topic, entitled: Holding Space- A Guide to Supporting Others While Remembering to Take Care of Yourself First-
Published by All Things That Matter Press.
Feel free to write for more information if you're interested!
For now, I felt that some quotes on being yourself would be the best use of the rest of this page... Enjoy!
